When was the last time you considered your low back before undertaking an activity?
Did you know that certain movements or positions, may place greater pressure on your lumbar discs than others?
Our lumbar region is responsible supporting taking the load from two opposing forces. A downward force from gravity and an upwards force from ground we stand on. Recognizing those opposing forces can play a major role in promoting spinal health, especially if we tend to load our back under heavier loads.
The graph above created by Nabil Ebrheim , shows the different loading our lumbar disc undergo in various different positions. By using the lowest value (25kg) as the base line, our bodies throughout the day can go through a hand full of different positions shown and with the highest recorded Lumbar disc pressure being up 11 times the baseline value (demonstrate when carrying a 20kg weight in a slouched seated position).
To ensure that we are protecting our back, we need to ensure to avoid further loading of the intervertebral disc. Whether its at work or at home, it is paramount that we keep a upright posture and that we maintain a straight back when picking up anything from the floor.
